The 30th annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival will be held Saturday February 18 and Sunday February 19 10am to 6pm. On display are demonstrations, museum and historical records of Florida’s oldest working fishing village. Seafood, arts and crafts and live music will also be part of the increasingly popular festival that is held every year.
Rules and regulations for the beaches of Anna Maria Island are governed by Florida State Law, the code of ordinances of Manatee County plus the additions and modifications within the 3 cities of Anna Maria, Holmes Beach, and Bradenton Beach, that comprise the municipalities of the island.
The beach is treated as a ‘park’ for the purposes of applicable codes and enforcement of rules. Alleys and paths to the beach are included as ‘entryways’.
The old sedan has a lot of things going for it. Many new car models do not compare as well as one might think … especially in light of the special circumstances that exist on an island. For one thing, salt and high humidity are tough on an automobile. There is something nice about having a car that is so old that there is no concern about watching it deteriorate.
Cortez is full of extremely picturesque cottages where real life still goes on. In many parts of the country, these kinds of communities have become sterile tourist attractions, no longer authentic but Cortez still works hard to maintain its traditions and meaningful activities, and the population still works in the local fishing industry.
Several power boats and sailboats with structures adorned with lights and ornamentation started at dusk and presented to anyone willing to turn away from their TV screens, a beautiful parade of Christmas cheer and music, traveling from near the Key Royale bridge, in and out of the Grand Canal, and up and out the channel to the City Pier in pitch black moonless sky.
Bayfest returns for 2010 in Anna Maria. The always popular event will be held October 15th, 5pm to 10pm and 16th, 10am to 10pm at Pine Ave in Anna Maria City, at the north end of Anna Maria Island.
Our hostess had added great beauty to the table and other parts of the house with greenery, berries and flowers entirely grown in the yard; gold berries of the variegated schefflera, which formed the centerpiece for our table, along with areca palm leaves laid directly on the table cloth for a beautiful tropical look that still said “Christmas.”
Anna Maria Island in September is usually one of the quietest months of the year, in terms of entertainment and special events. Now in its ninth year, Bayfest will be held this 2009 on the weekend of October 16.
