Anna Maria Island bridge will close from early morning, Monday, September 29th, to allow planned repairs.

Holmes Beach will get some canals and channels deepened in the next round of budgeted dredging projects.
The Holmes Beach City Commissioners approved funding $270,000 in their last meeting for about a dozen locations to be dredged, under a multi-year State permit.

Anna Maria Island and surroundings were surprised last night by the double sonic boom created by the return of the space shuttle Endeavour.
A small delay in the shuttle’s re-entry brought the glide path over the island and it’s normally tranquil evenings.

The planned 2011 $7.5 million beach renourishment project for 1.5 miles of Anna Maria shoreline will not use Federal money, according to Charlie Hunsicker, ecosystems director at Manatee County. Funding will come from state and county taxation.

Some out-of-area commercial fishermen were checked for compliance with fishing regulations while netting for mullet in Bimini Bay (also known as Fiske Bayou) on Anna Maria Island.
Residents alerted the Holmes Beach Police Department to what appeared to be a large netting operation in nearby fishing and protected sea grass beds.

On Jan 15 the US Coast Guard begins its new winter schedule for the timed raising of the 2 bridges that connect Anna Maria Island to the mainland.

Anna Maria Island residents in Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, and Anna Maria City can dispose of household hazardous waste at a collection station to be set up Jan 26 by Manatee County. Hours will be 9am - 3pm on the Gulf side parking lot of Coquina Beach Park.
