The Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage, F.I.S.H., will hold the first ever “Mullet Invitational Fishing Contest” in Cortez, Florida.

The event will be held Friday and Saturday September 5-6, 2008. The contest will be a tribute to Ben Gullett of “Gullett’s Smoked Mullet” fame and proceeds will be to the benefit of F.I.S.H.

Mullet may be caught using only cast nets. No seine nets, gill nets or gill cast nets are permitted. The contest area ranges between Ruskin and Sarasota. Each team may enter up to six mullet in the contest. Prizes will be awarded for the top three catches in multiple categories.

The fish will be fried and served from 6 pm on Saturday evening during the awards ceremony.

Star Fish Company of Cortez is sponsoring the contest. The competition entry deadline is August 25, 2008.

More details and registration forms are available on the Cortez Village Historical Society web site or at Star Fish Company, 12306 46th Ave West, Cortez.
