Seven Ways to Enjoy Spring Break on Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is a great place to spend Spring Break, as long as you’re not looking for a party. Not every college student is an extrovert. Many are looking for something a lot more interesting than joining a herd of students who are experimenting for the first time with alcohol, sex and drugs. For those college students who are mature enough to already be clear about these things, and who are intelligent enough to want to do more with their time than run with the crowds, Anna Maria Island is a lovely destination for Spring Break or any other holiday.

So if you are a college student heading to Anna Maria Island this spring, here are some suggestions for what you might want to do while you’re here.

  1. Rent kayaks and paddle around the many safe and shallow waters. Pick up a map at the information center or look in the newspaper to see some of the possibilities of where to go. You can even try fishing from your kayak.
  2. You will feel as if you’ve gone to Europe for spring break when you spend a day enjoying the grounds of the Ringling Museum of Art. The art is only the beginning of what’s interesting there. The architecture of the museum is stunning. The Ringling home, Ca d’zan, and the circus museum are both unusual and fascinating, as is the historic Asolo Theater.  A little closer, in Bradenton, check out the Planetarium in South Florida Museum and “Snooty” the manatee.
  3. Walk for miles on the endless Gulf beach. You can even plan your walk with breaks for meals or refreshments at any of many fun beachfront restaurants. All three towns on the island offer terrific eateries on or right near the beach.
  4. Ride the free trolley from one end of the island to the other. Get off whenever you feel like it to poke around the shops and restaurants.
  5. Go fishing. If you can’t afford to go out on the water with a charter captain, you can join the locals on one of the piers. It’s a very friendly crowd in a relaxed and beautiful setting. And, who knows, you might even end up catching dinner.
  6. Have a picnic at one of the picnic tables all over the island, or right on the beach. You can find all you need at Publix, from delicious sandwiches in their deli, to fruit and plenty of tempting baked treats in the bakery.
  7. Catch up on your reading and your sleep. At this time of year, you can enjoy open windows or you can relax on the deck or patio. The sound of rustling palm fronds will remind you are in paradise even if you have to spend part of your Spring Break reading textbooks.
