Surf Report from White Ave, Holmes Beach

Jan 18, 2008:  The cold front brought overnight wind from the SW and a wind swell of up to 6 feet on the Gulf of Mexico.

White Ave surf break

Area surfers soon converged on their favorites spots, one of them being Anna Maria Island’s White Ave location.

There were 40 – 60 surfers at the beach break all day.

The wind dropped early and conditions improved as the tide changed. By evening there were still 30 – 40 guys out, perhaps boosted by the upcoming holiday weekend for Martin Luther King Day on Monday.

Water temperatures are holding near 70°, and the air temperature stayed a comfortable 74°. The forecast for the weekend is cloudy and mild turning sunny and cooler Sunday.

[…] Many of my windsurfing friends have returned to surfing, or learned it for the first time after giving up windsurfing. Although Anna Maria Island does not offer the greatest surfing conditions, plenty of people pursue it here, and the most popular spot is on the beach in front of the White Avenue access path, at the border between the cities of Anna Maria and Holmes Beach. On some days, it’s amazing how many people surf at White Ave. […]

Maybe you should talk about venice and st pete more. I mean how many people do we need to pack into white ave.

During TS Marco there were breaks the whole length of the island, and probably the whole coast, but for some reason people want to be at White Ave.

Well maybe it’s because a post like these that everybody wants to surf at White Avenue. Everyone’s a forecaster.

I love your reports and surf pics! Keep up the great job! Allows me to mind surf when I am hard at work.
